SVP CX & Innovation, Northbridge FinancialCase Study: Fostering an Innovation Mindset in Global Leaders
Situation:
A Fortune500 company is conducting an annual global leadership offsite that brings together their leaders from around the world. The CEO has set forth ambitious goals and wants to win against intense competition and market forces. The team of 100 leaders have been working remotely, and 20% are new to the team.
Challenge:
How do we get senior leaders thinking and working in new ways to advance the business?
Solution: The Business Design Capstone
As a culmination of 3 days of self, team and business learning, participants worked over 2 days to address wicked business problems in new ways:
- Teams of 5-10 (Director – VP level) worked on a live executive-sponsored challenges (e.g., new customers, silo busting, the future of work, driving new revenue)
- Expert instruction through the principles and practices of Business Design: (Strategic Choicemaking, Stakeholder Empathy, Problem Finding and Reframing, Ideation & Co-Creation, Rapid Pretotyping, Iterative Feedback, Strategic Storytelling)
- 30-60 minute sprints, supported by facilitation and workbooks
- A final shareout with the corporate leaders
Results:
- Corporate leaders gained 20 new insights and 20 new ideas. 18 ideas went into testing; 2 ideas were implemented into the strategic plan
- Participants brought back new energy, new techniques and tools to foster innovation within their teams
- New cross-brand and cross-region collaborations were formed to drive strategic goals (e.g., “Let’s work on that together”, “We want to be the first to test this.”)
- The Business Design Capstone has been embedded into the annual strategic offsite for the past 8 years. It now runs 3 times / year.
